Call for HEAIDS abstacts

The University of Fort Hare is calling for abstracts for:

A Symposium on: Integrating HIV/AIDS into Higher Education Curricula entitled From Reflection to Action: Obstacles and Successes in Integrating HIV/AIDS into University Curricula.

The symposium will take place on the University of Fort Hare, East London Campus from 15-16 May 2009. READ MORE

FHISER to embark on national Women's Museum project

FHISER is embarking on a research project which will be used in the establishment of a national Women's Museum at the historical Lock Street Gaol site in East London.

Senior researcher and head of FHISER's Youth, Gender and Reproductive Health Programme Dr Nolwazi Mkhwanazi said the project consists of researching the history of the gaol, the inmates and the successive owners and tenants of the historic site. READ MORE

People and Parks – FHISER announces exciting new programme

FHISER's new postgraduate programme: Nature, Tourism and People-Based Conservation will be launched in 2009. This innovative, multi-disciplinary, post graduate programme will promote and facilitate research in the following areas:

• Landscape representation, natural heritage and processes of inclusion and exclusion;

• Knowledge, power and the construction of conservation and development models;

• Ecotourism, its operations and consequences;

• Democracy, autocracy and challenges of local governance in relation to conservation-driven development.

The Programme has a particular concern to critically engage with and develop new approaches to People and Parks programmes. It will be run on a MA/PhD internship model, on a full or part time basis. A coursework component may also be possible at the Master's level*. Interns will have the opportunity to work on commissioned research projects in Eastern Cape nature reserves.

Successful fulltime candidates will be eligible to apply for bursary support. READ MORE

2009: New Masters' in African Studies Programme

The new Masters' in African Studies Programme takes off this year at the Fort Hare Institute of Social and Economic Research (FHISER).

FHISER is a dedicated inter-disciplinary research and postgraduate training centre on the University of Fort Hare's East London Campus. The Institute is now offering a two-year taught Master's degree programme in partnership with the African Studies Centre at the University of Oxford in the UK.

Graduates will be awarded a Master's Degree in Social Science specialising in either South African Cultural Studies or Gender Studies from the University of Fort Hare.

The programme is geared to stimulate new and dynamic research and scholarship about Africa and Southern Africa, combining academic and applied perspectives and approaches to the continent.

Apply now for two Master's internships

THE Youth, Gender and Reproductive Health Programme at FHISER, in partnership with the Higher Education AIDS (HEAIDS) office at the University of Fort Hare, are offering two full time Master's internships.

The interns will work closely with the HEAIDS office for the first six months of their internship documenting the research on HIV/AIDS that has been conducted by the University of Fort Hare and developing a data bank.

The intern shall also be enrolled in the two year African Studies Master's Programme provided by FHISER within the African Gender Studies area of specialisation. READ MORE

PUBLICATIONS

The Life, Work and Legacy of Monica Hunter Wilson (1908-1982)

The booklet was produced as a visual and textual guide for conference particpants and guests at the Monica Wilson Centenary Conference in 2008. Delegates, family and some 30 international scholars revisited the legacy of this groundreaking anthropologist in her historic home in Hogsback. READ MORE
