People and Parks – FHISER announces exciting new programme
FHISER's new postgraduate programme: Nature, Tourism and People-Based Conservation will be launched in 2009. This innovative, multi-disciplinary, post graduate programme will promote and facilitate research in the following areas:
Landscape representation, natural heritage and processes of inclusion and exclusion;
Knowledge, power and the construction of conservation and development models;
Ecotourism, its operations and consequences;
Democracy, autocracy and challenges of local governance in relation to conservation-driven development.
The Programme has a particular concern to critically engage with and develop new approaches to People and Parks programmes. It will be run on a MA/PhD internship model, on a full or part time basis. A coursework component may also be possible at the Master's level*. Interns will have the opportunity to work on commissioned research projects in Eastern Cape nature reserves.
