WHAT'S NEW

FHISER postgraduate students, Gail Kirchmann, Manasa Sibanda, Ross Truscott and Isabel Gwaze examine texts in the Liberation Archives at the University of Fort Hare Library recently. The visit marked the end of a methodology course taught by African Studies postgraduates from the University of Oxford.

Fort Hare Institute of Social and Economic Research (FHISER), in partnership with the African Studies Programme at Oxford University and the Rhodes-Mandela Foundation, will be offering a taught two-year Masters programme in African Studies through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science at Fort Hare from 2009. Exploring the narratives of shipwreck survivors in the 16th and 17th centuries

Retired former head of the East London Museum, Gill Vernon, has had a lifelong love affair with the history of this region. Now she is indulging her passion by researching what she calls a pre-colonial history of South Africa's south-east coast by examining texts detailing shipwreck survivors' accounts of their journeys to Delagoa Bay (modern-day Maputo in Moçambique). FHISER African Film Seminar Series drawing to a close

FHISER is currently hosting an African Film Seminar Series, showing and introducing 11 films by African or Caribbean directors. The seminar series is aimed at Fort Hare staff and students and is being presented by African film expert Max Annas and FHISER visiting fellow, Henriette Gunkel. READ MORE

The Life, Work and Legacy of Monica Hunter Wilson (1908-1982)

The booklet was produced as a visual and textual guide for conference particpants and guests at the Monica Wilson Centenary Conference earlier this year. Delegates, family and some 30 international scholars revisited the legacy of this groundreaking anthropologist in her historic home in Hogsback. READ MORE
